In Brussels on 2 September, in front of an audience of 600 people, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy chose to be frank, humorously stating a few truths. What exactly did the former president say?

1. French Prime Minister François Bayrou is finished

Sarkozy gives Bayrou exactly zero chance of staying on at ‘Matignon’. He considers Bayrou to be a fake smart aleck, unreliable and talentless. His amused contempt made the audience smile: ‘Give me the brushes, the tubes of paint, the Bruegel canvases, and I’ll paint you a Sarkozy. Give my speeches to Bayrou… He’ll do a Bayrou (laughter).’

2. The end of Macron’s reign will be muddy

Sarkozy accuses his successor President Macron of asking him for advice for eight years without ever following any of it. He predicts that, after Bayrou’s fall, he will appoint a new Prime Minister, who will fail for the same reasons: the inability to find a majority. Finally, Macron will resolve to dissolve the National Assembly once again.

3. The RN will come to power

Sarkozy asserts that the RN’s rise to power, despite judicial manoeuvring, is now inevitable.

4. The RN is not far-right and the cordon sanitaire is “stupid”

Sarkozy explained that Jean-Marie Le Pen was genuinely far-right, his daughter is not, and Jordan Bardella is not at all. ‘To claim that the National Rally is not part of the republican arc is stupid. Because a party that fields candidates in elections, respects the results of those elections and has the largest group in the National Assembly cannot be said to be non-republican. Fielding candidates is one of the defining characteristics of a republic. You can’t say to them: you have the right to field candidates, but you don’t have the right to win elections. It’s a curious line of reasoning. They want power; I think they’ll get it. The far left doesn’t want power. They want disorder and revolution. It’s not the same thing.’

5. End of the cordon sanitaire and support for the RN?

Let’s be clear: Nicolas Sarkozy did not expressly support the RN. However, the logic of his speech points inexorably in one direction: that of the union of the right to seize power. In other words, the end of Chirac’s cordon sanitaire, which guarantees that the left, even if crushed at the polls, would remain in power for centuries to come.
