Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was transported to a hospital in the Washington, DC, area by ambulance on Tuesday.
Noem, 53, has been the center of leftist protests over her intense crackdown on illegal immigration.
Noem had an allergic reaction and was taken for treatment out of an abundance of caution.
“Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction today. She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “She is alert and recovering.”

She is reportedly conscious and has spoken to her security detail in the hospital.

According to independent journalist Nick Sortor, Noem’s ambulance was escorted by multiple Secret Service vehicles.
